CBD Potency Explained: Total Milligrams vs. Milligrams Per Ounce

Two large numbers on CBD labels can describe very different concentrations. Here is the simple math that makes products easier to compare.

SMARTER COMPARISONS

“4,000 milligrams of CBD” sounds stronger than “2,000 milligrams,” but package size matters. A large container can hold more total CBD while having the same—or a lower—concentration than a smaller one.

Total CBD

Total CBD describes the amount of CBD claimed in the entire package. It is useful for understanding how much the package contains, but it does not tell you the concentration by itself.

CBD per ounce

CBD per ounce makes differently sized topicals easier to compare.

CBD per ounce = total CBD milligrams ÷ package ounces

Example: a 2-ounce product labeled with 2,000 milligrams of CBD contains a claimed concentration of 1,000 milligrams per ounce. An 8-ounce product labeled with 8,000 milligrams has the same claimed concentration.

Cost per 1,000 milligrams

For a rough value comparison, divide the price by the total CBD milligrams and multiply by 1,000.

Cost per 1,000 mg = price ÷ total CBD mg × 1,000

This number does not measure ingredient quality, texture, scent, customer service or individual experience. It simply prevents package size and oversized label numbers from doing all the talking.

What the math cannot tell you

  • Whether the label matches a current product-level lab report
  • Whether the ingredient list fits your preferences
  • How the product feels or applies
  • Whether a product will produce a particular result for an individual

Potency is one comparison point—not a medical claim and not an automatic measure of quality. CBD Top 5 uses potency alongside lab transparency, label clarity, formulation disclosure and customer policies.
